Peripheral Neuropathy Causes Symptoms Treatments Discussed

utah valley calmare
hello welcome to our webinar today my
00:03
name is dr. Eric Bingham i’m a
00:05
board-certified chiropractic physician
00:08
today as topic is going to be on
00:10
peripheral neuropathy and we’re going to
00:13
talk about how kalmar treatment treats
00:16
peripheral neuropathy what peripheral
00:19
neuropathy is the cause of it and some
00:22
some options for you you know it’s one
00:25
of the common things we treat in our
00:26
office and so we’re excited to be able
00:28
to see if we can help more people with
00:30
this type of condition so first of all I
00:33
like to start off maybe what peripheral
00:35
neuropathy is and proven opti is
00:39
basically a result from nerve damage it
00:43
causes weakness and numbness and pain in
00:45
the hands and feet a lot of people
00:47
describe it as a almost wearing like a
00:51
stocking or a glove on your hand and
00:54
it’s very painful very uncomfortable a
00:58
lot of people describe the symptoms as
01:01
being you know an onset of numbness and
01:04
tingling in the hands and feet burning
01:07
sensation jabbing electrical bike type
01:11
pain they’ll even have skin and nail and
01:16
hair changes on on their feet and on
01:19
your hands lack of coordination where
01:22
they’re just not able to move and use
01:23
their hands and feet as much as they
01:25
would like and a lot of people describe
01:27
is like they they don’t like heat if I
01:31
patients come in that describe they love
01:34
walking on cold tile or keeping their
01:37
feet out of the covers at night they
01:40
don’t like anything touching their feet
01:42
whatsoever a very painful condition and
01:46
difficult to sometimes even diagnose as
01:49
far as what the cause is and so that’s
01:53
the next thing we’ll talk about is is
01:54
what what are some of the causes of it
01:58
and it can be difficult to pinpoint some
02:01
of those factors but I’ll go over a few
02:05
of those that i think are common one of
02:08
them is alcoholism you know with
02:11
alcoholism
02:12
it creates a poor dietary choice for
02:16
people so that leads to vitamin
02:18
deficiencies and that can lead to
02:21
neuropathies there’s autoimmune diseases
02:24
out there like lupus and rheumatoid
02:26
arthritis gullion barre syndrome chronic
02:30
inflammatory conditions a number number
02:34
one I think would be like diabetes a lot
02:36
of people know about peripheral
02:39
neuropathy associated with diabetes i
02:41
would say half of the people with
02:43
diabetes is going to get some type of
02:45
neuropathy in their hands and feet and
02:47
one thing with that when we do treat the
02:50
neuropathy in our office we want people
02:52
to have their diabetes under control and
02:54
and so that’s one thing we can talk to
02:57
you about when you come in other common
03:00
things are medications chemo therapy is
03:05
a huge one i would say forty percent of
03:08
the people that do chemotherapy are
03:10
going to get some type of neuropathy in
03:13
their hands and feet they’re doing
03:16
studies at the Mayo Clinic and the
03:17
massive Cancer Center on with the kalmar
03:21
treatment and treating the the pain
03:24
associated with the chemo drugs and
03:26
having some fantastic results with it
03:28
and other ones could be trauma car
03:32
accidents sports injuries can cause
03:36
severe peripheral nerve damage tumors
03:39
and cancers can cause it and even
03:42
vitamin deficiencies so common ones
03:45
would be b1 b6 b12 those are common ones
03:49
that cause you know if you have a
03:52
deficiency in those those are crucial
03:55
for nerve type of health so encourage
03:58
you to make sure that your symptoms are
04:02
that you’re taking those vitamins to
04:05
help with those symptoms so then the
04:10
next thing that we would do is you know
04:12
is finding the diagnosis you know and
04:15
the way you’re usually your medical
04:17
doctor or whoever you go to and they’re
04:20
going to do a full medical history on
04:21
you their dinner illogical evaluations
04:24
and physical exam
04:26
and and our goal is to find out the
04:29
cause if we can find the cause and treat
04:31
it and get rid of it you know that’s the
04:33
best option but in some cases there’s
04:36
there’s no solution once there’s been
04:38
that nerve damage then then you’re
04:41
there’s no way to to fix it so all we
04:44
can do at that point is actually just
04:46
treat the symptoms and help the symptoms
04:49
feel better and so that’s where i’ll
04:53
talk about you know the treatments
04:56
associated with neuropathy probably the
05:00
main thing that if you went your medical
05:02
doctor or neurologist they’re going to
05:04
give you some medications typically
05:09
anti-seizure medications they found that
05:13
like lyrica gabapentin neurontin you
05:17
know it’s just a very difficult thing to
05:19
treat with neuropathy nerve pain is not
05:23
controlled very well with opiate or
05:25
narcotic type of medications and so they
05:29
found that like topamax and lyrica
05:31
gabapentin run they helped a little bit
05:34
you know it’s probably only option that
05:36
that medically they have to be able to
05:38
treat and help with those symptoms but
05:41
there’s been a new breakthrough with
05:44
this kalmar therapy that it’s a new FDA
05:47
cleared device that treats neuropathic
05:49
pain and we’ve had some phenomenal
05:53
results with that I’ve never seen
05:55
anything work as well as this does in
05:58
those medications they helped a little
05:59
bit but nothing compared to what this
06:02
kalmar therapy does and we’ve just had
06:05
some great success with it i would say
06:08
eighty percent of the people we see you
06:11
know get phenomenal results what’s nice
06:14
about is we can usually find out from
06:17
that first treatment if it is something
06:19
that will probably help them it’s a
06:22
series of 10 treatments that a patient
06:24
will go through on average but that
06:26
first treatment we’re looking for pain
06:28
relief if if we don’t get any pain
06:30
relief then you’re probably not a good
06:32
candidate for this type of therapy but
06:35
when a patient comes in you know we do a
06:37
full workup on a physical evaluation
06:40
medical history and physical exam and to
06:44
see if they are a good candidate for
06:45
this type of therapy and you know it’s I
06:49
had a patient last week that came in she
06:52
was she’s been suffering with peripheral
06:54
neuropathy for 14 years she tried
06:58
everything from medications to nerve
07:01
blocks to acupuncture two creams you
07:06
know you name it she’s tried it and she
07:09
had heard about us and was skeptical
07:12
just because nothing really seemed to
07:15
work for but we were able to get her
07:17
completely out of paint and and that’s
07:20
that’s a common story that we here with
07:22
a lot of patients that come in here and
07:25
you know we’d love to help anybody that
07:28
that’s interested so you know if you
